Sardinia in all four seasons: beautiful even in fall and winter

Sardinia is a surprising destination whatever time of year you choose to visit. In spring and summer, of course, it reveals its most colorful, fragrant, and lively side, with its crystal-clear sea, the light that radiates across the natural landscapes, and its biodiversity. But autumn and winter often reveal its authentic and fascinating character, which is still relatively unknown.

The recent snowfalls in the heart of the island have transformed the mountains of Barbagia and Gennargentu into breathtaking scenery, confirming this theory. These places are perfect for those who want to discover our land during this period, without giving up the city, but deciding to enjoy a different experience during the day while staying at the Birkin Hotel in Cagliari.

With this article, and with the Christmas holidays approaching, we would like to suggest some itineraries that will allow you to discover Sardinia in a new way, showing a different side to the island than is usually seen. A hospitable Sardinia, warm even in the coldest months, lively and surprising, just a few hours' drive from Cagliari.

Nature trail: from Cagliari to Gennargentu

Starting from Cagliari, if you choose to stay in one of our hotels, in less than two hours you can reach the small mountain villages of the most authentic Barbagia, including Fonni, Desulo, and Belvì. These small villages are surrounded by centuries-old forests and currently snow-covered landscapes. Here you can walk along paths that wind through chestnut groves, springs, and ancient mule tracks, breathing in the fresh mountain air and admiring landscapes that rival those of the Alps.

Alternatively, it is possible to walk through the woods on snowshoes, preferably with the assistance of experienced guides, climb the highest peaks in Sardinia, and perhaps stop to savor the flavors of the Barbagia region at one of the many local farmhouses.

Cultural itinerary: timeless traditions

Autumn and winter are the best seasons to discover the most authentic Barbagia. Nuoro, Orgosolo, and Mamoiada are unmissable stops: from murals that tell stories of life to museums dedicated to traditional masks, every corner speaks of identity and memory.

A visit to the Ethnographic Museum in Nuoro, about a two-hour drive from one of our Birkin Hotels in Cagliari, allows you to delve into the history and rituals of a territory that is unique in the Mediterranean.

In Mamoiada, on the other hand, in addition to visiting the famous Museum of Mediterranean Masks, you can combine a historical and cultural tour with a food and wine tour. The small town is home to numerous wine cellars, including some very prestigious ones, which offer tasting tours to discover the diverse and unique history of their territory.

Food and wine itinerary: flavors of an island

This season is the perfect time to sample the hearty, traditional dishes of the Barbagia region. From roast meats to pasta dishes, mountain cheeses to full-bodied wines, every stop is a journey through the island's most authentic flavors. Many villages offer open cellars, tastings, and small local markets.
